Penn Museum Archaeological Adventures

WHAT: Sensing History: Join us for a sensory-friendly adventure around the Museum! Whether your family has special needs or likes to explore with their senses, all are welcome to take part in this Homeschool Day. Explore the past and travel around the world through guided tours or Storytime Expeditions in select galleries. Participate in activities that bring history to life by activating the senses. Try out some hands-on history by taking part in an interactive workshop that investigates daily life in ancient cultures or the process of mummification.

WHAT: On September 17, 1787, the Founding Fathers signed the most influential document in American history: the United States Constitution. This document established the framework of our government and the rights and freedoms that “We the People” enjoy today.

Every year, the National Constitution Center hosts the best Constitution Day Celebration in the country.  We are the place to turn to help you commemorate that historic day while meeting your federal education requirements.  Join us at the museum for outstanding and engaging programs or use our fantastic on-line resources in your classroom.

WHAT: In this course children of all ages will develop their skills with clay. The instructor will offer a variety of fun projects that step-by-step explore techniques for hand-building for those students who are new to working with clay or who want to expand on their current knowledge. Students with specific projects in mind will have the time, space, materials, and technical support to pursue their visions. Those familiar with wheel throwing will have the facilities and materials to develop those projects independently. Enrollment is limited to ensure that each child will be provided adequate space and the instruction/technical assistance he or she needs.

WHEN: Mondays, 10 weeks, September 25-December 4th (No class October 23rd. Make up days December 11 and 18.)

WHAT: Museum Day Live! is an annual celebration of boundless curiosity hosted by Smithsonian magazine. Participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day Live! ticket.

Be a Blacksmith: Homeschoolers Immersion Series

WHAT: Beginning Blacksmithing will be offered at Harriton House. Come and work with Harriton’s blacksmiths to learn about tools and fire and coal and metals. There will be a reference library of books and forged iron objects to see and handle. You will get hands-on experience in shaping small items of forged iron (steel actually), and you will go home with the product of your labor and instruction. For homeschoolers and their industrious parents, whether you think you have large biceps or small ones, you can participate.

(PHIT Comedy)

PHIT Kids & Teens classes create a safe space for students from kindergarten through high school to develop their creativity and comedic talent, while making new friends and sharing lots of laughs. Our improv curriculum is designed to delight and challenge each student at a developmentally appropriate level, allowing them to feel comfortable and accomplished as they learn the art of improvisation.

PHIT Kids & Teens would love to offer daytime improv classes that might better fit into the schedule of homeschoolers and their children. To this end, we are looking to gauge interest and determine if there is a day(s) and time of day that would work for the majority of interested families. All of our K-12 classes are staffed with one lead teacher and an assistant and meet for 1.5 hours. We must have a minimum of 8 students for a class to run.

Science in the Summer

WHAT:   The Science of Sports. Behind every professional basketball player, gymnast, swimmer, and sprinter is a team of scientists who help athletes excel in their sport, from trainers, nutritionists and physical therapists to statisticians and equipment engineers. Students will learn about these scientists and tackle basic scientific concepts through fun, hands-on activities like experimenting with healthy sports drink recipes and creating their own bouncy balls to test bounce height against other sports balls.

Living History Sundays Return to Graeme Park

WHAT:   One Sunday each month from May – October, 2017 costumed volunteers will enrich the visitor experience by presenting living history activities at Graeme Park. Volunteers will interact with guests as they tour the house or grounds and will do a short presentation at 2 p.m. on the day’s topic or theme. Topics include: Colonial Hearth Cooking, Fathers and Family in the 1700s, Reflections on Independence, The Revolutionary War & Its Impact on the Locals, Slavery at Graeme Park, Colonial Medical Practices

Futsal or Music for your kids? 

If you missed the open house for homeschoolers last week to check out Grow Philly’s Youth Futsal Academy or Music Class, you still have the opportunity! First class can be your FREE/TRIAL class (please RSVP via email)!

WHAT: Futsal is a smaller scale modification of soccer perfect for soccer players of all ages, and genders! Futsal focuses on soccer fundamentals such as ball control, passing, scoring, teamwork, and good sportsmanship while having fun learning the game.
