Fantastic Philadelphia Field Trip Ideas

Here’s a list of some more fabulous places to take your homeschool group, class, or family for a field trip!

1.  Police Equestrian Unit:  Located at 8600 Krewstown Rd, Philadelphia.  215-785-0457 or 215-685-0457.  Learn about how the Philadelphia police force uses horses as part of their service to this city.  This is a fantastic trip and its free!  It’s difficult to find though; be sure to bring your cell phone with you and give the officers a call when you know you’re close.

2.  Virtual Reality Lab (at Rowan University): This is an amazing trip recommended for small groups. It’s a multi-million dollar lab, so it’s not recommended for impulsive, high-energy kids. Cost is $10 per person. http://www.rowan.edu/home/rowan-vr-center/field-trips

3.  Woodworking Demonstration:  Cost Free!  If your students have an artistic bent they will love this field trip.  They also offer special classes specifically for homeschoolers.  http://www.philadelphiawoodworks.com/

4.  American Helicopter Museum: Only about an hour away from Philly.  Cost: about $7 per person. This is a great educational trip! They offer different classes for each age group.  http://www.americanhelicopter.museum/educational-programs

5.  UPenn Robotics Lab: Come see the latest new robotic engineering.  The things these students are working on will blow your mind.  Cost Free!  https://www.grasp.upenn.edu/engagement/k12/tours

6.  Mycopolitan Mushroom Farm:   Yes, there is a business in Philly that grows Gourmet mushrooms.  This class trip has a “chemistry class” flavor to it.  Older students would definitely benefit.  Recommended for small groups.  It’s free!  http://www.mycopolitan.com/#home-about

7.  CARES Animal Hospital: Allows students to come take a tour for free!  Located just outside the city.  Here’s the website: http://vetcares.com/

8.  Municipal Court Tour:   This trip allows students to get an up-close look at our justice system.  It’s free!  Recommended for junior high and up.  Municipal Court @ The Philadelphia Courts – First Judicial District of Pennsylvania

9.  Philadelphia Police K – 9 Unit:  Learn about police dogs, the tasks that they perform, their training program, and see them in action.  This is a wonderful trip and it’s free.  Recommended for all ages.  It’s difficult to find though; be sure to bring your cell phone with you and give the officers a call when you know you’re close.  Their contact info is on their facebook page.  Here’s a link: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Philadelphia-Police-K9-Unit/415526591886851
