Facing the Homeschool Giant (reblog)

FACING THE HOMESCHOOL GIANT

I’m thinking of homeschooling ….. BUT ….

BUT … I don’t have a teaching degree.  I’m too inadequate.  Throughout scripture, God often takes people from humble beginnings.  He also uses unlikely candidates for His plans.  Moses had trouble speaking.  Jeremiah was too young.  David was the youngest of his brothers and worked as a shepherd.  1 Samuel 17:15 “But David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.”  David’s father, Jesse, didn’t feel David was prepared for the challenge of war.  He only sent him to the battle lines to bring his older, stronger brothers some food.  When David approached Saul about facing Goliath, the Philistine Giant, Saul told him, “You are just a boy.”  However, David remembered times in his past when God gave him victory over other troubles (a lion and a bear! see vs. 34)  He knew that God could give him victory again.  Child of God, you don’t need a teaching degree to start homeschooling.  Homeschool law says you can start with a high school diploma or GED.  Remember the many struggles The Lord has brought you through before.  You may feel inadequate, but God can still use you in your children’s lives!

BUT … My family, relatives, neighbors don’t think I should do it.  David’s older brother, Eliab, made it clear to David that even talking about facing Goliath was absurd.  1 Samuel 17:28 “When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, ‘Why have you come down here?'”  Fortunately, David listened to God’s calling rather than his brother’s advice.  Child of God, has The Lord been tugging on your heart about homeschooling?  Remember it is His leading you must follow!

BUT … Homeschool Teaching Materials are so Elaborate, Expensive, Overwhelming!  Saul tried to dress David in his own armor, but it wasn’t a good fit for David.  He knew he would not be able to fight Goliath wearing all that.  He knew he had to approach the giant in his own, simple way, with just five smooth stones and a sling.  1 Samuel 17:38 – 40  “Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic.  He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head…. ‘I cannot go in these,’ [David] said to Saul, ‘because I am not used to them.’  Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, [and] put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag …”  Child of God, there are many elaborate, expensive, homeschool materials available, but there are simple, inexpensive ones too!  Ask the Lord to help you find your “five smooth stones”.

BUT … My mind keeps telling me I can’t do it!  Goliath taunted David.  He made it clear that the battle was futile, that David would die trying.  1 Samuel 17:44 “‘Come here,” he said, ‘and I’ll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field.”‘  Perhaps your thoughts are telling you the same thing — that the Homeschool Giant is too big — that there’s no way you can handle it!  But what about the Holy Spirit?  What is God telling you?

BUT … Homeschooling looks so difficult!  How can I possibly do all I need to do and give my child a good education?  Goliath the Philistine was HUGE!  The Bible says he was 9 feet tall and wore heavy armor.  But David says in 1 Samuel 17:45 “You come against me with sword, and spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.” 1 Samuel 17:47 “All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword, or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s …”  Child of God, homeschooling is hard.  It is a huge, “giant” undertaking, but you can succeed!  Not because you are qualified, brilliant, or a champion teacher, but because despite your weaknesses, God can use you to accomplish His mighty tasks.

Child of God, has the Lord been tugging at your heart?  Have you wondered if this might be His plan for you and your children this Fall?  The giant of homeschooling looms before you, but it is not impossible.  It can be overcome!  The battle is not yours, but the Lord’s.  1 Samuel 17:50 “So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, without a sword in his hand, he struck down the Philistine and killed him.”    May the Lord teach you and guide you, directing you to the plan of action, curriculum, resources, and friendships you will need to achieve victory as well!

2 Corinthians 12:9  “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

1 Corinthians 1:27, 29  “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong …. so that no one may boast before him.”

1 Corinthians 2:5 “so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.”
