Art/Writing/Video Contests 2014

Just thought I’d let homeschoolers know about the following art and writing contests.  It’s nice to know that homeschoolers can participate, and the businesses are offering wonderful prizes for the winners.  Also, it’s a great way to teach our homeschoolers about meeting deadlines.

Here’s a list:

Green City, Clean Waters Art Contest

For Who:  All students in grades K – 12

Assignment:  Create an original work of art (or video) showing how we can make Philadelphia a greener, cleaner city with cleaner waters.

Due Date:  Friday, February 28th, 2014

Prizes:  $100, $75, $50 gift cards for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place.  (There are separate categories for different age groups.)

Mordechai Anielewicz Creative Arts Contest

For Who:  All Students in grades 7 – 12

Assignment:  Create an original work of art, write a poem, write an essay, perform a dance, create an original vocal or instrumental work related to the Holocaust.  (Several themes are listed.)

Due Date: Friday, March 7th, 2014

Breaking Barriers Essay Contest

For Who:  All Students in grades 4 – 8

Assignment:  “Write an essay about a barrier that you have faced. Explain how you used one or more of Jackie Robinson’s nine values—courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence—to face this barrier.”  (This quote taken directly from Scholastic’s website.)

Due Date:  March 14th, 2014

Prizes: 3-day/2-night trip for 2 to the 2014 All-Star Game scheduled for July 15, 2014, in Minneapolis, MN, a laptop computer, a visit from Sharon Robinson, daughter of Jackie Robinson, books and T-shirts.

 Doodle 4 Google Art Contest

For Who:  All Students in grades K – 12

Assignment:  Doodle a version of the Google Logo based on this theme: “If I Could Invent One Thing to Make the World a Better Place…”

Due Date:  Thursday, March 20th, 2014

Prizes: Artwork displayed on Google homepage & $30,000 college scholarship

Creative Communication Poetry Contest

For Who:  All Students in grades K – 12

Assignment:  Write a poem on any subject, no more than 21 lines

Due Date:  April 10th, 2014

Prizes: $25 check & a free copy of the anthology that is created from the contest.

Destination Schuylkill River Student Photo Contest

For Who:  All Students in grades K – 12

Assignment: Create a striking, digital image highlighting outdoor recreation.  2 age groups: grades K – 5 & Grades 6 – 12

3 categories:

  • Landscape
  • Adventure
  • Wild Life & Still Life

Due Date:  June 1st, 2014

Prizes:  Digital Cameras; 1 grand prize winner will win $1000 in art supplies
