Kids’ Sewing Lessons 2013

Sewing Classes for Homeschoolers in (or near)  Philadelphia

WHAT: Sewing Lessons for kids ages 8 and up

WHERE: In my home in Northeast Philadelphia

WHEN: Thursdays from 2pm to 3:30


COST: $50

DISCOUNT: Additional siblings only $25 each

START DATE: Thursday, March 14th

END DATE: Thursday, April 4th

TEACHER: Gwen Fredette (me!)  I’ve been sewing for over 20 years and have experience making curtains, pillows, aprons, dresses, quilts, comforters, etc.

Course Outline:  

Week 1 – Overview of Using a Sewing Machine & Make a Pin cushion
Week 2 – Make a Small Pillow or doll’s blanket
Week 3 – Make a Stuffed Mouse & Begin Fleece Throw Blanket
Week 4 – Finish Fleece Throw Blanket; Make a Smock or Tote Bag

Materials Needed: 

  • A good pair of sewing scissors.  (Paper scissors will NOT work)
  • An empty shoebox
  • 1 yard of polar fleece (your child can choose any design he/she likes)
  • All other materials will be provided!

Skills Learned

  • Parts of the sewing machine
  • How to sew buttons
  • Straight stitch
  • ZigZag stitch
  • How to change size of stitches
  • Forward and Back stitch
  • Free-hand sewing
